Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I choose Custom Coaching Solutions?
Many of our young men are failing because traditional methods aren’t working in today’s world. Custom Coaching Solutions was created specifically to help today’s youth. Our proprietary program is based on Invisible Landmines, a book authored by founder, Johnny Henderson, using lessons he learned through his own struggles with alcoholism and depression. Our coaching is extremely personalized to every client’s needs and current situation, with daily contact, weekly parent meetings, and 24/7 on call access to a coach. We involve the whole family, but one of our main concerns is achieving freedom for the parents and protecting the parent-child relationship. We are action and results-oriented, making sure to adapt our program as the client’s situation changes. Simply put, our programs WORK.
Why does life coaching and failure to launch treatment work?
Our programs work because they are action oriented, transformative for permanent solutions, and tailored to each client’s situation. Often, the young men we help have tuned their parents out and require a professional to try a different approach. The truth is that young men respond to non-familial male role models and mentors far better than to their parents or a therapist.
Our programs work in the long run because we incorporate them into daily life; the young men learn strategies and a framework to navigate the real world and give them the confidence to overcome failure to launch syndrome. For those struggling with substance abuse, rehab is essentially a break from regular life. Upon leaving rehab, most people fall right back into old patterns because they didn’t learn how to exist outside of rehab. With Custom Coaching Solutions, your son will have support and coaching to live in the real world, with support slowly phased out until he can be fully independent.
What is the difference between therapy and coaching?
Therapy and coaching overlap, but they have different areas of focus. Therapy focuses more on the past; identifying the source of issues and then repairing the broken parts of ourselves. It is a long-term, holistic approach that can take years. We highly recommend therapy, but coaching is different. Coaching focuses on the now and on changing the immediate situation. It involves working with what you have, identifying strengths, and setting specific goals for the short term future. Coaching is very action-oriented and always focuses on creating an action plan to achieve the goals that have been set. The coach then helps the client follow the plan by holding them accountable, supporting them, and keeping them motivated, always with their goals in mind.
Do you take insurance?
Unfortunately, coaching is not covered by insurance. Our clients find it a worthwhile financial investment to get the help of a trusted professional and help their son start on the path to successful independence.
How do I know if my son needs life coaching?
The truth is that all young men could benefit from the core principles of Invisible Landmines and some time with a certified coach. The main indicator is whether you feel that your son could function and survive out in the world on his own. Does he have healthy habits such as setting goals, completing necessary tasks, bring on time for work or appointments, budgeting, cleaning up after himself, brushing his teeth, and sleeping well? If the answer is no, he could benefit from working with Custom Coaching Solutions.
What if I don’t think I can get my son to work with you?
Many parents express skepticism that their sons will agree to our program. The good news is that you don’t have to get your son to commit to the entire program right off the bat; the first step is to have him come to the initial assessment. For part of the assessment, our coach will speak to him alone. Our coaches have a unique way of relating to young men and can almost always get them on board with the program. They are also experienced in helping parents set boundaries that will encourage their sons to participate in the program and give it their best effort.
Is my son “bad enough” to work with you?
Your son’s life doesn’t have to be spiraling out of control to work with us. We help a wide range of young men. While we do offer sober companionship and coaching for those struggling with substance abuse, many of our clients are simply directionless and living in their parents’ homes with no plan. This is called “failure to launch,” and it’s surprisingly common. These young men simply need guidance to develop healthy habits, set goals, acquire life skills, and chart a course to adulthood. Don’t wait until you feel that your son is doing “bad enough” to need coaching - the earlier, the better!
What can one of your coaches do that I can’t do for my son?
You can most likely agree that if you knew how to help your son, you would have done it by now. When all else fails, a professional who is experienced at working with young men like your son is the best person to help him learn to take responsibility for himself. Our coach will hold your son accountable in a way that most parents find very difficult to achieve. Additionally, the parent-child dynamic often prevents parents from helping their sons out of these types of situations. Most of our clients have tuned their parents out and see their efforts to help as “nagging.” When a neutral third party gets involved, suddenly these young men will listen.
Does my son have to live in the Charlotte area to work with you?
In today’s world, we can and do provide life coaching services virtually. While some parents worry about the effectiveness of distance coaching, the younger generation is accustomed to doing everything virtually and is often more comfortable connecting online than in person.
How much do your programs cost?
Since every situation is unique and requires different levels of coaching, our pricing is customized. Please schedule a free consultation so that we can learn more about your son’s needs and discuss pricing options.
What happens during the free consultation?
The free consultation is a phone call that lasts 30-45 mins. In this call, you’ll tell us what’s going on so we can get an idea of your situation. We’ll explain our pricing, answer any questions you have, and give you some references of other parents that you can contact. If you decide to further explore the possibility of working with Custom Coaching Solutions, the next step would be to schedule an initial assessment.
What does the initial assessment entail?
The assessment is an in person meeting for all of us to determine if we are a good fit and if we’d like to work together. It costs $250, but if you decide to continue with the program this will be deducted from the cost. During the assessment, the coach will first meet with the parents without the son present to get a picture of the situation and what needs to be accomplished. Then he will meet with the young man without the parents present to hear his view of the situation and assess whether he is open to being coached. Finally, the coach will meet with the parents once more without the son to give his assessment of the situation and his recommendations for continuing. From there, the family can decide to sign up for a program or to pursue other options.
How long will my son need to be on the daily program?
Every situation is different, but in general you should expect for your son to be on the daily concierge program for two to three months before moving to the maintenance phase. We require at least two months of daily work with our clients to build habits for success and create real change.
What is the maintenance phase like?
The maintenance program is highly customizable for each client’s needs. You purchase a package of hours, which can then be used as needed. This could mean that the coach touches base with your son for 15 minutes once a week, or for one hour twice a week. You, your son, and our coach can work together to determine what is best for him. As time progresses, we can adapt the frequency of contact to your son’s needs, whether that means increasing or decreasing it. During maintenance you still have 24/7 on call access to a coach for any situations that may arise.
I notice that you lean on Christian teachings. What if my son is not a Christian?
Due to his own experiences while overcoming addiction and depression, Coach Johnny founded Custom Coaching Solutions on spiritual principles. Our programs are based in spirituality, but no client is required to believe or practice any form of religion or spiritualism. We help young men of all religious orientations and absolutely never judge them for their personal beliefs regarding religion. The spiritual aspects of our coaching philosophy have more to do with a source of power that one can draw on. The concept of this power is each person’s own to decide as they wish.
